Can an 11-year-old that hasn’t had sexual intercourse yet can announce they’re gay, lesbian or bisexual?

There is no specific age for a person to question or to understand their sexual orientation. Although most people experience questioning, exploration and affirmation periods, others are already sure of their sexual orientation since childhood. Recognizing our own attraction to one or more genders doesn’t automatically need romantic or sexual experiences. It can be recognized by an 11-year-old, even if they have yet to have any experiences. For example, many people say that they have known that they were heterosexual their entire lives, yet this reality can also be the case for people of any other sexual orientation.

Although it is possible that sexual attraction and orientation change over time, it is important to respect how a person identifies at the moment without invalidating it, whether it is because of their age, their lack of experience or any other factor.
